What’s your power word?

OK, go!

And if you’re willing, please share your word in my comments section and keep reading to learn what mine is. 🙂

I was thinking about this today because my life and training often mirror each other and I’ve got a lot on my plate. I just finished my application for grad school and I’m probably going back to school in the fall, and I’m also training for Mount Evans Ascent in June.  All of that feels outside of my comfort zone, and that’s why I’ve been playing with words and mantras.  I can use all the help that I can get.

I LOVE words — I always have. Back when I was a newspaper editor one of my favorite things was writing headlines. It always gave me great satisfaction when I came up with a good one. I love how words can paint pictures in your head. This also happens to me when I pick a good mantra. I think mantras can help you stack the odds in your favor during training.  Obviously, nothing is a guarantee but when you’re training hard, you want to draw strength and inspiration from wherever you can. For instance, both of my kids did something cool recently that made me think of power words to describe them.

My son just tested for his next belt in karate. That, by itself, wasn’t a big deal, but he was the only one testing at his level, which meant he had to do it alone with everyone in the room watching him. Keep in mind he’s 8 years. I’m not sure I could have done that when I was 8. I was shy and probably would have cracked under the pressure, but he didn’t. He passed and I was proud of him, but most of all, I was floored by his courage. That leads me to my power word for him: “Courageous.” He’s always had a courageous heart and I admire that about him.

Last week my daughter gave a speech in front of her entire fifth grade class at school. Like many people I know, public speaking scares her.  Later she confided in me, after her presentation was over, that the first time she ever spoke in front of a large crowd, about a year ago, she cried afterward. This time, however, she practiced in front of me and she was better prepared. When it came time for her to do it she came off confident and happy — just the way she is when you’re with her in a small group or one-on-one. She blossomed like a sunflower, which brings me to the word that makes me think of her: “Ebullient.”  She’s always had a joyous spirit about her no matter what.

Last weekend I ran the Greenland 25K Trail Race in Larkspur, Colorado.  Here’s proof:

Greenland was balls to the wall for me and the longest run (15.5 miles) I’ve done since the Tucson Marathon in December.  I knew I was under-trained going in but I went for it anyway.  It was exposed the whole time and my Garmin (timer) crashed at the first aid station, but I finished.  It was good training for Mount Evans in that it had some climbing and some less-than-ideal conditions, although I expect it will be windy and cold and miserable in a different way at high altitude rather than being baked. Still, Greenland was challenging and while it wasn’t a spectacular finish, it was a finish nonetheless and indicative of the power word I choose for myself: “Tenacious.”

I’ve always been a tenacious person and I’m a plucky runner. That’s my strength. I’m not an elite athlete, but I’m willing to work hard and train smart and see where it takes me. Sometimes that’s all you need. Next month I will run up Mount Evans, which is a 14er.  I’ve never hiked a 14er but I’ll succeed because I’ve made up my mind to do so.

If you are receiving this post today it’s because I was successful in converting my own blog, “Boston or Botox” and its content to my new domain name and site, “Run. Work. Live. Repeat.” (http://www.RunWorkLiveRepeat.com)  Hurrah!

For a while now I’ve been feeling like it was time for me to make a change with my blog and then God and the universe prodded me to do so. My response was creating this new site and domain name.  I also signed up to run the Mt. Evans Ascent Race today (gulp!) — which bills itself as “America’s Highest Road Race.” It starts at 10,600 feet of elevation and finishes at Mt. Evans, 14,264 feet.

The way I see it — you either gotta embrace change or run really fast in the other direction from it if you don’t. Climbing Mt. Evans will push my limits, and isn’t that what life’s about anything — changes and pushing the envelope to new places?

It’s time for a blog makeover

Hi friends, I wanted to let you know that it’s time for me to give my blog a makeover. I  am changing the name of my personal running blog from “Boston or Botox” to “Run. Work. Live. Repeat.” (www.RunWorkLiveRepeat.com)

Tagline: “A running blog about chasing your kids, chasing your dreams, and chasing away a few grey hairs in between.”

All of my old posts will move over with it, and I’ll still write about “marathons, motherhood, and midlife triumphs,” and of course, the Boston Marathon, but a lot more, too. It simply was time for a change and to expand my literary and writing focus. It feels good.

I’ve secured the domain name, RunWorkLiveRepeat.com, but the new site isn’t live yet. I will let you know when it is. It should be within the week. Hopefully I’ll MacGyver my redirect pages correctly and they won’t come up operating like an old Yugo, but in case they do, please look me up. Your support has meant the world to me. I’ll give all the techie stuff my best shot in the meantime.

You’re never too old to run marathons or anything else … unless you think so — part II

20140310_163119Brownie, our dog, is greying a bit around her muzzle. She’s older than we thought.  Our vet said the Aussie rescue where we got her probably stretched the truth about how old she was so she would get adopted.  It’s not a huge surprise really.  Most people want puppies over adult dogs, but she almost didn’t get a second chance because of her age. What a shame that would have been. She’s a great dog.

These days I’m contemplating changing careers, and I can’t help but wonder, what if, just like Brownie, my age makes it harder for me to get a second chance?.I sure hope that doesn’t happen, but I think it’s a valid concern. I believe we live in an age-obsessed society that often values youth over wisdom or life experience. This worries me.

For the last several weeks I have been researching going back to school to become a teacher (getting a post-baccalaureate teaching license). Under the best of circumstances, if I were able to start school by the fall, it would take me a year and a half to two years to complete. However, it’s likely I will need some prerequisites before I can start. This would push back the time frame more.  In either case, if I take those paths, I will be almost 50 years old by the time I finish!

I can’t lie — the thought of starting over again at 50 (probably surrounded by everyone in their 20s) freaks me out!

Growing older, however, can be freaky.  It often feels like jumping into the deep end of a cold pool. The initial shock can be harsh, but once you get used to it, it’s really not so bad. The way I see it is … time will pass and I will get older no matter what I do so I might as well make the most of it. Why not  follow a dream?

Like mothering and parenting, and being a journalist and a writer (which also have been my calling), I believe teaching is a noble profession  — and one that society sometimes undervalues, but it’s still worth it in my eyes. This, too, is keeping me going.

As I ponder my options it helps that I am a runner and a marathoner and very much an optimist who believes in grace to guide me. Plus, most of the time I don’t feel someone who’s just a few years shy of an AARP card. (Hey, Michelle Obama just got hers!)   I know my driver’s license says that I’m that old, but I honestly feel much younger. I  am healthy, and happy, and young at heart and spirit, especially when I run. Having qualified for and run the Boston Marathon showed me just how much I’m capable of and that I can do anything if I put my mind and heart in it.

Being surrounded by other runners also helps me. If there is one community I know that doesn’t shun people for their age, it’s runners. Most runners I know embrace those who take up the sport and don’t fit the mold.  That’s especially true when you see young runners reacting to older ones. When I see runners older than me, I think,  “Hey, look at him (or her) and how strong he (or she) is.  That’s how I want to be when I’m his (or her) age.”

And heck, with running and racing, growing older or “aging up” as it’s called when you move into an older bracket when you race can even work to your advantage if you stay healthy and strong and even just keep going. (The age groups tend to get smaller with less competition.)

Ultimately, I believe I will overcome any “ageism” I might encounter, but just like how I’ve trained myself for marathons, I want to be ready for whatever comes my way.

When we got Brownie a few years ago, all she wanted was a home and family, and somewhere she belonged.  In essence, I think we all want this in life no matter where we go or which path we choose.  It wasn’t too late for Brownie to find her new “home”. Hopefully, with a little patience and fortitude, it won’t be too late for me either.

You’re not too old to run marathons … unless you think so

Welcome to Boston or Botox in 2014. Yes, I am a little late on the New Year’s thing. So what?  I have always been a late-bloomer of sorts and that is precisely why I am asking this question today, “Are you ever to old to (Fill in the blank)?

The “blank” can be running a marathon, qualifying for Boston, finally writing that novel that lives inside of you so the rest of the world appreciate it, starting your own company, changing careers, or living out whatever your heart desires and your dreams may be.

To answer that question let me throw out another great quotation for you to ponder:  “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” — Henry Ford.

Goal-setting requires that you get your mind in the game first, but how do you do that?  That, my friends, is where it often gets as dicey as the roads here in Colorado after another hard winter storm.
If you are like much of the country these days, we’ve had a lot of storms to weather this winter. Whew! Those storms can be tough and so can jump starting your goals and dreams.
Whether we like to admit it or not, all of us get preconceived notions when it comes to aging, our bodies and our goals — from what we read, magazines and news feeds, advertisements, from what our family and friends tell us, notions passed down to us from generation to generation, yadda, yadda, yadda, etc., etc.
In the end though it comes down to this: How do YOU define yourself and what you want?
A few years ago Runner’s World did a cover story on the popularity of qualifying for Boston and my blog got mentioned in it. I was interviewed for it but the editors choose to highlight some other people’s quotes. The questions they asked me centered around why qualifying for Boston attracted so many women in their 40s. My answer, distilled down, was that I think the 40s are a time that many of us choice to redefine ourselves. I know I did, first by pushing myself to become a marathoner and then qualifying for Boston. These were huge mental and physical accomplishments for me.
Since then I have been searching for what’s next and I’m I honing in on it. Right now I am looking at going back to graduate school and starting “my second act.”. My first was as a journalist and newspaper. I am not ready to reveal all the details yet but I am excited about the possibilities I’m considering and energized by them.
It’s definitely had me pondering the question, “Are you ever too old to shift gears and start something new?” (i.e, Fill in those “blanks.”)
I don’t think so.  If you look around you can find proof and here’s an example. Check out this Youtube video on Johanna Quaas, who, at 87, worlds the Guinness World Record of being the world’s oldest competitive gymnast.

The way I see it, if Johanna can turn cartwheels in her 80s (Check out how strong her core is — dang!), surely I can accomplish a few mental flips and changes in my 40s.

I am not too old and I refuse to buy into that message. How about you? What are your dreams? What, if anything, holds you back? I encourage you to go for it.

My Tucson Marathon Recap: Saguaros and Sisterhood

TucsonMara2013 wasn’t my best year for Boston or Botox or otherwise, but thankfully it’s ending on a good note.  I ran the Tucson Marathon well and finished in 4:02.

A few weeks ago, as I prepared to race Tucson on Dec. 8th, I mentioned that my blog got hacked recently.  That’s part of the reason why I haven’t written much this year.  The other reason is 2013 was difficult for me personally; oftentimes I didn’t have the stamina in me to blog.  I think we all face challenges some time during our lives; 2013 was one of those years for me.  An example: I had surgery a few days ago to address a health concern.

In a way, however, it was perfect I found redemption in the Arizona desert because at its worst moments 2013 felt barren to me.  However, the one thing I can tell you from having lived in New Mexico for many years is that the desert is NEVER void of life or hope, no matter how it appears from the outside.  Even the prickly yucca bears flower and fruit.  You just have to look for them with an open heart and mind.  The challenges we all face in life and running, I believe, are much the same.  Hope for the better is always possible and within our reach.  That’s where I find myself today – blossoming like the yucca after the rain.  I am ready to blog, run and live more fully again.  Thank you for your kindness, support, and patience during my dry spell.

Success in the Sonoran Desert

It’s been more than two years since my sister and I have traveled and raced together so this race was a treat.  The last time was in Moab, the Canyonlands Half Marathon, March 2011, a month before I ran Boston.

Even though I ran the full and my sister ran/walked the half, this trip became about two similar things for both us: Family and finishing.  We accomplished both and had a wonderful trip together.

We flew in and out of Phoenix so we could visit our cousin who lives there. Then we drove into Tucson the day before the race and stayed at the hotel hosting the race, The Hilton Tucson El Conquistador.  The grounds were really beautiful.  The Tucson Marathon course has had many incarnations from what I read about it and apparently it used to finish near the hotel.  It doesn’t anymore.

The Tucson Marathon, organized by ultrarunner Pam Reed of Badwater fame, is a cumulative downhill course, with more than 2,000 feet of elevation drop according to the race website.  It’s considered a fast course and for the most part I think it’s true, although I’m not sure the variation of it that we got this year was its speediest version.  Apparently a few weeks before this year’s race, organizers changed the last five miles of the course.  It affected both the half and full marathon course.  From what I heard from locals who had done the course in 2012 and this year, it was supposedly harder.  It didn’t matter though because for me and my sister it was just the course we got that day.

Aside from the changes to the last 5 miles I liked the Tucson Marathon course and I was mostly impressed by the organization that went into it.

I caught my bus to the start from out hotel and was happy to learn that it was both heated and had a working toilet while we were shuttled to the start.  Once we got there we were allowed to stay on the bus until almost the very start of the race.  That weekend it was unseasonably cold in Denver when we left the airport, with temperatures hovering around zero, and subsequently it was also unusually cold in Arizona with it being 32 degrees at the start of the marathon. By the time I finished it was only in the mid-40s.

I loved the start of the race, it was dark as ink at dawn, and I watched the sunrise the first few miles.  The downhill was severe at the start, especially around several first turns and I forced myself to take walk breaks so as to not go out too hard or fast at the start.  I started out doing Galloway Method for the first 5 miles; running 9 minutes on followed by 1-minute walk breaks.  I abandoned it, however, so I could just walk through the water breaks when I wanted and fortunately there were plenty of them every few miles.

Several miles into the race we fit an open road and highway and we passed the Biosphere.  I remember finding the course to be more rolling hills and uphill than I expected, especially between miles 10-13.

Between miles 15-20 I hit my stride and I felt great.  I ended up meeting a runner from New Mexico, Cara, and we ran and chatted together.  She had run the course the year before and warned me about what was coming as she had driven the course the day before and I hadn’t.  Like me Cara was shooting for a BQ. For me I needed to run 3:55 or better. She had just turned 50 and needed to run under 4:00.  As we were coming up on mile 19 she told me she would not be able to keep up with me and to go on.  I was really hoping she would get a second wind because I enjoyed her company but it didn’t happen.  Around mile 20 I dropped her and picked up the pace.

The last few miles the course turned into a Tucson neighborhood and around mile 23 we climbed what felt like a monster hill.  In reality it was only 200 feet but it felt like Everest at that point.  The one saving grace was that there was this fun group of volunteers at the top, high-fiving and spurring everyone on.  Their enthusiasm was contagious and pulled up that beast.  Then the reality of the downhill hit me with full force.  It felt like I was dropping, just as steep but covering half the distance to do it, and my quads took a brutal thrashing from it.  I remembered thinking to myself, “Oh God, I’m going for that one!”

Despite the difficulty of those last few miles I miraculously never hit the wall – amen and hallelujah!!  I kept running strong, and I passed a lot of people.  My strategy was to go out conservatively and hope to negative the course until mile 20 and then treat the last 10K like a hard race and give it anything I had left.  That’s what I did when I pulled my first BQ at California International Marathon in 2009 and it worked well. I’m not sure how much true speed I had left that last 10K but I also felt strong and never fell apart either.  I also learned that my stomach tolerated Clif Shots well, which we, the racers, got from race volunteers near the end.

Although I didn’t get my BQ – this time– mentally and physically I ran a great race.  I felt like the Hansons Method, which I used for training, was a terrific fit for me and for my strengths and weaknesses going into the race.  I learned a lot about what I would do to improve next time.

I found out my new friend on the course, Cara, ran a 4:06. The year before, 2012, Cara told me she ran Tucson in 3:57.  Again, I took this as a sign of the course with its alterations being slightly more challenging than expected, although it was still relatively fast.

My only criticism at Tucson was the marathon pacers.  They were some of the worst I’d ever seen at any race.  I was in front of one group of pacers and I heard one of them yell out that they were “four minutes ahead of pace” at something like mile 6.  I remembered thinking that those pacers were going to hurt someone and it was highly irresponsible.  The goal is for them to lead people pretty much spot on.  Any good coach will tell you there is no such thing as positively splitting a marathon (running the second half of the race slower) and not paying the toll for it.

I am happy with my finish at Tucson and it gave me my confidence back to know I will BQ again.  Onward and upward, folks!!

Where am I today?  As I mentioned earlier I did have surgery a few days ago; but thankfully, I’m already feeling better.  My hope for the next few months is simply to run strong, have lots of fun with family and friends (I have several girlfriends who are doing Rocky Raccoon in the spring and are running trails in the coming months) and focus on my 10K speed and racing.  If there is one area I feel I need to shore up for next marathon it is running my longer tempos stronger.  I believe some solid 10K training will help.  I intend to do another fall or winter marathon in 2014 (I haven’t determined which one yet) and I WILL BQ for a second time in my life.

As for my blog, it’s time for me to finish out those profiles of other great Boston or Botox qualifiers and to get back to writing humor and fun discussions about marathons, motherhood and midlife triumphs.

Tomorrow 2014 will be here.  My resolution for 2014 is NO resolutions for me, except for surrounding myself with joyous people and things that promote happiness and wellness around me and others.  I am up for the challenge.  How about you???  I hope so.

Each marathon teaches a lesson: Roar!

It’s T-5 days until I run my next race: The Tucson Marathon. I’m excited.

Each marathon training teaches me some new life lessons. While I’ve trained for Tucson I’ve mastered the art of surrender and when it’s simply time to let things percolate until you’re ready to “wake up and smell The Consciousness.”

Now I’m ready to go after what I want with the ferocity of a tigress ..

ROAR!

Perhaps that’s why we face tough or unexpected challenges in life? So that we can use them to define us, not break us.

Last month, for example. someone hacked this blog and website and it took me some valuable technological time to recover from that. The clean up I had to do was a fitting twist to the kind or crazy, strange, unexpected year I experienced in 2013. I won’t bore you with mundane details but I will say this: I could have choose to let some events beat me to a pulp. I didn’t. I’m still standing, and I’ve bounced back better, stronger, and happier.

I plan to run a solid race at Tucson. I’ve followed Hansons for my marathon training. It has gone well. Whatever comes on Sunday I’ll hold my head high.

My new “committed relationship”: Foam rolling + running

Have you ever avoided something you knew was good for you? Something you didn’t do even though you thought you should?

Until recently that was my relationship with “Freddy.” That’s my nickname for my Orange Grid Foam Roller (Retails for about $40). I confess: I avoided “Fred” and the idea of foam rolling for the longest time even though I knew it would help my muscles. Why? Because just like a real human relationship foam rolling has its ups and downs.

fredFor those of you unfamiliar with the benefits of foam rolling for muscle recovery and stretching here’s a link that explains it: Roll Away Injuries: The Benefits of Using a Foam Roller (Competitor, Feb. 2013).

Foam rolling can help keep you healthier and it’s certainly done that for me as I’ve ramped up my mileage to prepare for the Tucson Marathon in December. (I’m running around 50+ miles a week these days using the Hansons Marathon Method to train.)

I credit Fred in part for helping me this go-around, but I also can’t lie. This committed relationship is definitely a love-hate one. Yes, my body and muscles feel better after I foam roll, but Holy Moses!! Does it ever hurt sometimes when I’m in the process of doing it?! My husband often stares at me in disbelief as I roll on the floor, wincing and occasionally yelling in pain. When I hit the right spots — the muscles that are too tight — it can hurt like crazy and I find myself having to breathe though it. The upside is I feel tremendous relief when I’m done and my running form has improved again over time. I don’t know if I will ever “fall in love” with foam rolling but as long it keeps me healthy, I’m sticking to it.

And here’s the other thing I’ve learned — my “Boston or Botox” epiphany — from foam rolling regularly. As we get older it’s even more important not to avoid things that make us better and healthier. When you’re younger you can get away with shortcuts or pushing your body too hard without paying the consequences. That’s not true when you get older. Your margin for error grows slimmer to the point where you can’t afford not to do things that benefit you.

Is there something you know you should be doing to be healthier or become a stronger? Maybe it’s remembering to put on sunscreen or a hat before you go outside to protect your skin? Or maybe it’s staying better hydrated when you run? Whatever it is, I encourage you to share it here. Start your own new “committed relationship” like I did. Your body will probably thank you later.

See K.C. Run and BorB is Back!

This POST has been a LOOOONG time coming …

First off, WELCOME to the NEW Boston or Botox, now on WordPress!

The reasons for my long hiatus were: 1) I was in the process of converting this blog; and 2) It’s been summer. My kids were home while I’m also working; and my life has been busy and chaotic.

But I’m back now and just like Rocky Balboa, in fighting form and better than ever!

If there’s one thing that defines a runner — most of us, anyway, it’s our ability to “Rocky up” and persevere.

Yes, while most of us challenge ourselves to go LONG in the process, it really is more about how FAR we’ve come when we look at where we began ….

On that front I have two accomplished to talk about today.

This summer I not only learned WordPress, but on June 8, 2013, I coached an old friend, K.C. Compton, through completing her first half marathon ever.

WOO-HOO!!

Back in January she contacted me to be her coach. At that point she’d never gone farther than a 5K.

She asked me if I thought she could do it. My answer was clear: Absolutely!

The other quality I believe defines most runners is our audacity and K.C. is someone I’ve always known to possess it in truckloads. After she hired me on she was a pleasure to coach.

Throughout the years I’ve known her (almost 20), K.C. has donned many hats: Single, working mom; newspaper columnist; returned college student and grad (in her late 40s); musician and performer; newspaper managing editor, and most recently, senior magazine editor for Mother Earth News.

I’ve always considered it a blessing to know her and she continues to inspire me today.

And now she bear a new title: RunnerGirl!

I am so proud of her and honored to be her friend AND coach.

So what’s happened with K.C. since her big accomplishment? She got back on the training band wagon and was doing OK for a few weeks. Then, unfortunately, she experienced another real-world runner lesson. She got injured and sprained her ankle during her next phase of training. She’s now recovering and working her way back to Rocky fighting form.

It was tough for both of us when it happened but she got medical treatment right away and I know she will be OK. She’s one of the most “coach-able” I’ve met and she’s already on her way to getting better. She is setting her sights on a sprint triathlon for next year. I believe we’ll get there again healthy, safely and gradually.

As for me — the blog conversion is done. I signed up for the Tucson Marathon and I’m in the process of getting myself back in true physical Rocky fighting form, too. Now that the blog is on WordPress and the kiddos are back in school, I am ready to pick Boston or Botox again. I have several profiles in the works.

I can’t wait to see how FAR I and Boston or Botox will go next.
